The Characters

Explore the many different characters of the Reason series from Bret the main protagonist and his family to his best friend and a militia leader Greg McDonell to Jamul and the Colonel as they hunt down our protagonists on their journey through the Reason’s landscape.

Bret Gordon

Bret Gordon, main character of the Reason book series. Here he’s in full battle rattle and further into the war with his grown out beard. A civilian with early onset parkinson’s, which is just now starting to cause him some grief. Who took it upon himself to train as a modern day minuteman. Bret felt that he had to prepare himself for what may come to America due to China and Russia’s movement of their respective chess pieces on the geopolitical stage. He’s been involved in training of some sort from martial arts, Native living skills, to firearms and tactical movement and patrolling throughout the years leading up to the events in the Reason book series. Does he have what it takes to live through what’s coming to America? Can a trained civilian fight in a war to reclaim his country and survive to see it’s rebirth? Can he make it to his wife through the war torn back drop of his country?

Jen Gordon

Greg McDonnell
Greg McDonnel

Greg went into the Army after high school, finished basic training and then went to jump school. During jump school he stepped down from a sidewalk and fractured his foot! He didn’t report it because he didn’t want to get medicaled out of training, so he wrapped it tight, made sure his boot was extremely tight and took Ranger candy (Motrin) around the clock throughout training to pass. He earned his jump wings but also earned a slight limp caused by his stiff foot from not healing correctly. He eventually earned a spot for Ranger training and earned his tab and wore it proudly during his service with the Regiment. He served in the first Iraq war under the Elder Bush commanded by Storm’n Norman Schwarzkopf. Greg was also in Mogadishu on that dreaded day that’s been immortalized through film. He can’t bring himself to this day to watch that movie. He was later invited to try out for the unit and made it but we never discussed what went on during those years and being his friend, I didn’t pry.

During his time at Fort Campbell, Kentucky he started dating a Southern Bell named Marie and he fell head over heels in love with her. They got married in 1995 and I was honored to be his best man. They were blessed with two children who are all grown like my kids and have their own families. Greg put his 20 in the Army then transitioned into the civilian sector into law enforcement, most of his LEO career in SWAT.

The Colonel

He first appears in book one. The main Antagonist. The Colonel has a reputation for going through more aides than any other officer of his rank. He isn’t like the others. He prefers the simplicity of life as a noncommissioned officer, where he can stay close to his soldiers and, more importantly, personally administer discipline.
He relishes the time spent educating his men on how a soldier of the greatest army in the world should conduct himself. As a member of the Red Chinese Army, you are part of a legacy that stretches back thousands of years. To dishonor that legacy, to fail your ancestors, your family, and above all, the Communist Party, is unforgivable. And discipline is the only way to maintain that honor.
